A different kind of Christmas.

So, we have noticed that Christmas is almost a non-event here. Seriously, there are next to no Xmas lights on houses or buildings, there is virtually no Christmas music on the radio or in public, and only rarely does one encounter a decorated Christmas tree.

Curiousity got the better of us tonight. We went out to celebrate Christmas Eve (the entire world is behind New Zealand in relative time) and ended up chatting with two of the ladies on staff (see below). They were kind enough to offer their opinions on the subject.

When one thinks about it, the reasons are quite logical. Firstly, it being the middle of their summer break, there are other priorities. Secondly, with such long days it is difficult to really get into the “lights” thing (no one is up at 10:00 p.m. to see them in the dark) . Thirdly, it’s just the ambience; no snow, palm trees, shorts & flip flops etc don’t jibe well with Hollywood Christmas.

Our traditions just don’t translate very well to the southern hemisphere.

For some reason we didn’t see that one coming…

Anywho, we loved our evening. Went to Stratosfare restaurant overlooking Rotorua. The gondola ride was gorgeous!

Then we somehow scored ringside seats for the best view in the area:

The buffet was obscenely good.

‘Scuse us…food coma…

The lights are on here, the house is decorated , the turkey is in the oven and it’s snowing outside. Yes it’s Christmas.
    Enjoy your journey.

  3. Enjoy your down-under Christmas. I was born and raised in McAllen on the Tex-Mex border so am familiar with a brown Christmas and flip-flop weather!

Glad it has warmed up there. We were thinking of you when we read the wind chill factor was -45°!

  5. I’m amazed! This time not because of the scenery but because the kiwis don’t do Christmas lights. A lot of houses here are emblazoned with lights, nativity scenes, elves, sleighs etc. The power companies must love Christmas. People do tours around the suburbs to see the lights here. Mind you, we don’t have daylight saving in the west so the lights come on earlier here.

    1. WOW. Thanks for that information Veronnie. Interesting that it is so different in Perth. Is all of Oz like that?

  6. This is a little weird. I wrote a fairly lengthy comment on your awful day blog, but I don’t see that it showed up there. Hmmm? Anyway, I was wishing you a Merry Christmas there
Now we are getting ready to eat our traditional feast of lamb ribs here soon. So Christmas is on 😊.
