Waterfalls and trimming your roof.

No visit to Qualicum Beach would be complete without a visit to Englishman Falls and Coombs, which is home to a famed sod-roofed market.

Englishman Falls. I imagine it’s quite impressive during the spring runoff.

When we first visited this area back in 1994 we missed the falls, but we did take in the market (pretty much impossible to miss given its rather prominent location on the only highway connecting the east and west coasts of Vancouver Island).

Back then it was a quaint little market standing on its own. Now it has gone full-tourist, with trinket and junk shops everywhere and the ever-present district of restaurants and bars.

Nonetheless, it is still unique. It was a good day.

I found a lovely place to hang out while Bernie shopped. The Dos Equis was chilled and perfect for the occasion.

  1. That’s too bad about touristy all in the name progress.

    1. Compared to Orlando or California, it’s minor. 🤣

We saw the same thing happen between visits to Queensland, Australia. Things just don’t age in one’s memory!

    1. Dave loves those easy hikes! While en route to the falls we saw a black bear which reminded me we forgot our bear spray. It didn’t matter though as there were lots of people, which is what I like. Safety in numbers!

    1. It was part of the Mexican restaurant where we had lunch. Afterwards Bernie went shopping for a while. I didn’t. 🇲🇽🍺

What you described about the market is how I feel about Roche Harbor. When we started going there in the 90’s it was quaint and very intimate. Only a small dock in the harbor. Now it’s a sprawling village.

    1. I recall Roche Harbor from our cruise and it’s still charming, so I cannot imagine what it was like back then! I wouldn’t have wanted to leave!!

    1. Of course we remember you!!! Yep, we’ve been back in Canada since March. We just bought a house on Vancouver Island so our carefree travel plans are winding down. That doesn’t mean we’ll stop travelling though. We head to Panama in Jan. for a bit, then on to the DR for a couple of weeks. It will be so nice to see our stuff again after all this time. We get possession of our new house in October. So glad you guys reached out to us! Would love to cross paths again some day! ❤️
