Sooke: The shoutouts.
The last post of each stage will note the restaurants that deserve a shoutout: Fabulous west coast cuisine in a stunning location. The hills at the back tend to protect the patio from the prevailing wind. We often saw harbour seals swimming nearby and lounging on the kayak pier. Home Amazing Mexican food at ‘The…

An oddly named bike path
Okay, whoever named the bike path connecting Victoria and Sooke “The Galloping Goose” was clearly hallucinating. Possibly enjoying a few too many of the local mushrooms. Aug 11th, 2022.

And then there were our other companions…
We were rarely alone at Otter Point. Some were cool, some not so much. And then there were the deer. And more deer…and more… There is no need to post a speed limit on the highway to Sooke. The fear of the deer made most drivers behave.

Ahhh, the dusk.
The setting sun would shine on the Olympic mountains across the strait, seeming to illuminate the air itself. The lights on lazy cruise ships would twinkle under a varied-coloured moon. Rarely did we miss the dusk. T’was an excellent time for the hot tub. And of course we were never alone.

It makes one appreciate the skill of the captains in the old days, navigating by feel: listening to foghorns and watching for lighthouses. It is quite…

Now THIS is low tide!
What a day at Botanical Beach, near Port Renfrew (about an hour’s drive west of our rental house). This was the ultimate in ‘spring tides’, with the water dropping to a historic low. I went there with my sister Kas and her hubby Mark, and the sights were amazing! Such life in the tide pools,…

Gotta love a lighthouse
We do love history – especially venerable old lighthouses. The lighthouse at Sheringham Point just west of us, is a beautifully preserved structure thanks to the efforts of many locals who formed a society to preserve it. Built in 1912 in response to the horrific wreck of the SS Valencia 6 years earlier (100 men,…

Arrival!
Settling down in Otter Point, 10 kilometres west of Sooke. We loved the view (who wouldn’t??) but the pictures make it look far warmer than it was! As we were to discover, the winds blowing northward off the Olympic mountains chill out over the Strait of Juan de Fuca, giving rise to London-type fog in…
