Doing time in Mahana.
I got a reduced sentence for good behaviour. Only had to go 5 km (3 miles) into the Mahana Ridge Trail before turning around. But that still involved climbing 338 metres (1109 feet). Some of the sights were okay. Damn right I earned my beer. There were a few green aloe (Giant Cabuya plants) along…

Tide pools on the moon.
Parts of this trek were like the moon! Not a place for being clumsy. Our pace could be described as “one level below moseying along”. đ Then again, there were the places where one stopped and just took it in. I called it “Posh Beach”. The hotel above it had to be 5đ…and mostly empty.

Pippin time.
Every marriage requires compromise. Long ago we came to an agreement on how to spend our vacation time. Half is “David time”, that is, R&R. This is something I have a PhD in. The other half is “Pippin time”, which is a nod to the Hobbit of that name who “…had to look.” Bernie has…

Alii Nui sunsets.
So, a lady we met at the pool raved about the sunset dinner cruise on the large catamaran operated by Alii Nui. We took her up on the recommendation, and had a fabulous time. And, yes, Bernie saw and photographed another sunset. That makes 1,712…ish.

Our first morning in Maui. Please don’t hate us. Our first outing took us to the Mala Tavern in Lahaina (by bus; we are saving a fortune by not renting a car). It was about 20′ from the surf.

Now THIS is a TIDE!
Looking back at our hotel from the water’s edge. Based on how long it took to get out there, it may be about a kilometre wide. Oodles of clams in the sand. Too bad Bernie doesn’t do clam chowder. âšī¸

Ocean view!
Parksville, British Columbia. One of many gorgeous places along the east coast of Vancouver Island. Somewhere between Ladysmith and Qualicum is currently holding the number one spot on our list of places to eventually settle.

The Grand Ole Lady
A treasure for the past 114 years, “The Empress” is rightfully nicknamed “The Castle of the Coast”. She simply demands one’s attention. Designed by the renowned architect Francis Rattenbury (known for the stunning BC legislature and other CPR hotels of the gilded age, including Chateau Lake Louise), she sits on reclaimed land and still has…

Thar she blows!
Bernie’s brother TJ was kind enough to invite us to join him on a fishing trip. He was right that his natural good luck would overwhelm our history of bad luck. No, our history of the worst luck! We jinx entire fishing boats for multiple days. Captains have tried their most expensive lures to no…

Seriously “tying the knot”.
đ Okay, how adorable are Bernie’s niece Robin, and her wonderful partner, Bree? đĨ° We LOVED the “rope ceremony”. Apparently the oldest marital ceremony on earth belongs to the ancient Celts. To them, amongst the most valuable of possessions were rope and red dye. This led to red rope being used during wedding ceremonies to…
