Making a hole in a tree.
As you can see from the above panel, the adz was kinda important to the ancients. I bet it was also used to crack open coconuts or enemies, and in later years to open bottles of Budweiser. Why am I rambling? Because yesterday was Bernie-time. Which means hiking. Which means huffing and puffing and sore…

A hike, flowers and crab cakes.
David’s turn to choose the hike, so it was a half hour in and a half hour out. Called “Twin Falls”, it packed a lot in that short distance! Rather perfect for a lazy old fart. Unfortunately we forgot water shoes and bathing suits…so wisdom does not necessarily come with age. 😬🫤 I suffered through…

Doing time in Mahana.
I got a reduced sentence for good behaviour. Only had to go 5 km (3 miles) into the Mahana Ridge Trail before turning around. But that still involved climbing 338 metres (1109 feet). Some of the sights were okay. Damn right I earned my beer. There were a few green aloe (Giant Cabuya plants) along…

Tide pools on the moon.
Parts of this trek were like the moon! Not a place for being clumsy. Our pace could be described as “one level below moseying along”. 👆 Then again, there were the places where one stopped and just took it in. I called it “Posh Beach”. The hotel above it had to be 5🌟…and mostly empty.

Pippin time.
Every marriage requires compromise. Long ago we came to an agreement on how to spend our vacation time. Half is “David time”, that is, R&R. This is something I have a PhD in. The other half is “Pippin time”, which is a nod to the Hobbit of that name who “…had to look.” Bernie has…

A paradise for hikers
East Sooke Park. One can hike for hours or days. Lots of elevation change and ocean views. One hell of a workout. I’d love to do more hiking here eventually. Dave didn’t join Kas, Mark and I. 😂 We visited the seaside condo we are going to win in the B.C. Children’s Home Lottery. 😁

The beauty and mystery of fog.
The fog bank forms early almost every morning, and it’s almost eerie how it creeps in. Ships just vanish into it like the opening scene of some horror movie. It makes one appreciate the skill of the captains in the old days, navigating by feel: listening to foghorns and watching for lighthouses. It is quite…

Now THIS is low tide!
What a day at Botanical Beach, near Port Renfrew (about an hour’s drive west of our rental house). This was the ultimate in ‘spring tides’, with the water dropping to a historic low. I went there with my sister Kas and her hubby Mark, and the sights were amazing! Such life in the tide pools,…

Gotta love a lighthouse
We do love history – especially venerable old lighthouses. The lighthouse at Sheringham Point just west of us, is a beautifully preserved structure thanks to the efforts of many locals who formed a society to preserve it. Built in 1912 in response to the horrific wreck of the SS Valencia 6 years earlier (100 men,…
