Gotta love a lighthouse

We do love history – especially venerable old lighthouses. The lighthouse at Sheringham Point just west of us, is a beautifully preserved structure thanks to the efforts of many locals who formed a society to preserve it. Built in 1912 in response to the horrific wreck of the SS Valencia 6 years earlier (100 men, women and children killed), she served faithfully until 1989. A bonus is that there is an underwater microphone there, and you are free to listen to whatever happens to be swimming by. Unfortunately there were no whales or sea lions that day.

There is also a Sheringham gin, which we of course had to sample. I bought the rose-petal infused Japanese variety (Kazuki). Not our favourite. Lesson learned. Next time I will give the ‘Seaside’ a go.

Local distilleries love our visits.
