Hobbits & holes.

So, we went full-tourist today, absent the flowered shirt, camera around the neck and knee-high socks with sandals. We had a full day on the bus – our first stop was the village of Hobbiton in “The Shire”. The pamphlet had a wonderful, concise summary:

The vistas were truly incredible. They chose the location well.

Some Hobbit holes were small, for use with larger folk like Gandalf.

Some were a tad larger for use with Hobbits.

Some are quite famous, such as the hobbit hole of SamWise Gamgee. The final scene of the trilogy was shot here. The little girl running up to Sam was his real daughter, and the baby in Rosie’s arms when she exits the hole was her new baby.

Yes, I like trivia…

And of course…there is “Bag End”:

The oak growing over Bag End is an incredible fake.
We lied and said we were on party business.
The window on the far left was where Gandalf “pulled” Sam into the hole for eavesdropping.

Then there is central Hobbiton:

Directions.
The “Party Tree” where Bilbo vanished.
The “Party common”, where the bash was held and the dragon fireworks blasted off.
“The Water.”
The watermill and the stone bridge.
The Green Dragon Inn.
Inside the Inn.
Having a Hobbiton stout. There was NO pipeweed.

    Very cool. I have actually seen a documentary on that place. Looks nice and green, but a little chilly.

      It was drizzly at times but still very nice compared to what we are used to. 🌨️

      Ha! Very true. The smaller doors were only about 3 1/2 feet in diameter.

      Well, I am 2″ taller than Gandalf (but 4″ shorter than Saruman). 😁

      Then you would have been in heaven. Even some of the paths were familiar!

    This we missed when in NZ. That would have been fun to see. Christian would have loved to see this, he was a big fan of The Lord of the Rings. Great pictures

      We’re hoping to pick up more movie locations along the way. Most we will probably just have to imagine after the crews restored the sights back to their original state.
