Oregon near Auckland.

So my wife said, “Let’s do the hop on hop off bus on Waiheke Island. We’ll just walk on over to the ferry terminal on the quay, catch the boat over and have an easy day.”

Uh huh.

19.4k ‘Bernie-sized’ steps (in case you are keeping track Heather), 300 stairs and 12.4 km later we are taking it easy. You would think I would learn. 🙄

The first thing we noticed was the similarity of Onetangi beach to what one sees in Oregon and northern California. Probably just the forest and the flowing mist.

Dec 10th, 2022. Onetangi beach on the north shore of Waiheke Island.

One of the coolest sights was the “New Zealand Christmas Tree”, which sprouts red blossoms starting in mid-December. The variety of plant life was astounding.

To answer your question: of course there was wine! First up was the Miro vineyard and winery. A very small batch winery making only 800 cases a year. They sell out quickly.

The owner clearly has an obsession with Gaudi.

Then we had lunch and sparkling wine at the Batch vineyard and winery, located on the highest part of the island. The ‘champagne’ (oops, not allowed to say that!) was excellent, as was the cuisine and the views. It was our favourite winery of the day. 👇

The final rest stop was the Cable Bay vineyard. Very fancy and very busy. Lots of partiers…

Gorgeous place though, and excellent wine.

From here we hiked down a ‘bush trail’ to the Matiatia Ferry Terminal for the boat ride back to central Auckland.

A LOT of people drank A LOT of wine. There were multiple groups of young women partying like crazy. Not sure what the occasions were. We thought at least one was a bridal shower, but who knows?

I can say without reservation that Kiwi’s are every bit as loud as Americans! 🤣

    1. It totally reminded us of Muir Beach, and of the clouds rolling over the hills on 17 mile drive! The locals hate the weather, but we don’t mind it. It’s far better than 🌨️🌨️.

  2. Dave, where are you guys staying? A neighborhood friend moved to NZ about six years ago… be funny if you were right near her and her family!

Also, what’s the temp down there these days?

    1. We are in a hotel on the edge of downtown called the Grand Millennium. No houses nearby, but given the breadth of our walks anything is possible!

It’s been overcast with intermittent rain since we got here, with daytime highs hovering around 66°F. Not too bad, all things considered.

    1. We thought that tree was amazing. The flora and fauna here is off scale!

Bernie loved the gnocchi. And the sparkling wine. 🥂

  5. Looks beautiful and sounds like great fun. With all the walking you will be fit as a fiddle. What are the average temperatures there?

    1. It really is beautiful! It’s cooler than normal here. Even the locals are complaining. Apparently they had a wet winter too so everyone is hopeful for a warm sun to emerge soon! I think it’s at least 5 C (around 10 F) cooler now than it should be.

  6. Thankfully y’all will be there long enough for things to warm up a bit. Sending hugs and good vibes your way. I’m really enjoying your blogs/videos. I don’t comment every time but I’m enjoying them just the same.

    1. It is so unique! Never even heard of it before. Apparently originates from the Taranaki volcano and is carried up to this area by strong longshore currents.

They used to mine it years ago, but shut that down quickly.
