Stalactites, stalagmites, Moas and one helluva Pass.

A ‘c’ means it hangs from the ceiling, a ‘g’ means it grows up from the ground. When they join up it is the very imaginative “pillar” or “column”.

And that is your geological lesson of the day, with illustrations from the Ngarua cave, sitting at the apex of the Takaka pass between Nelson and Takaka.

Prior to the arrival of the first humans in Aotearoa (the Maori name for New Zealand) about 600 years ago, there was a huge Ostrich-like bird called a “Moa”. Standing up to 10′ tall and weighing 550 lbs, it was flightless and easy to hunt.

Remains of this bird have been found in caves, where they broke through the thin ceilings. Poor things…

I ended up driving the pass four times. Gotta say it was a wee bit uncomfortable in places! My grip on the steering wheel was rather firm at times. 😳 Kudos to Bernie for handling it well, especially when she was on the outside edge and there was no railing! πŸ†

  1. Thank you for the geology lesson, I have always struggled to remember which is which, stalagmites or stalactites.
I am trying to get back as a follower, I have had problems since new years, not getting any notifications (Grace has forwarded these to me). I tried to subscribe again but it came back and told me to please provide a valid e-mail ….? I hope it will work now.

    1. Ugh. Sorry you are having issues Viggo! The platform does seem a little goofy at times, especially for those with an iPhone.

      1. Well it seems to work now, I went back and started this thing over. Grace has an iPhone as well so that’s not the problem. I think it had something to to with me having my own WordPress blog account so it always asked to sign in before I could post anything. Anyway hopefully it’s OK now.
Good to se you are getting back on track. I assume you will start heading down the west coast now?

  2. Excellent! Glad it’s working again.

We have made it quite a ways south now. 5 1/2 hour drive from Punakaiki to Wanaka yesterday. I cut an hour off the time estimate made by Google maps. Grace would not have been pleased. 😎🀣

Have some catching up to do on the blog! I need more energy. 😬

    1. WOW, you have really hightailed it. I was going to comment on Punakaiki which we found to be a really interesting place. We stayed at the Ocean Resort on the beach right by all the pancake rocks. Interesting for a geologist I suppose? What about Hokitika and Fox Glacier, Cook mountain? You must have seen that?Anyway now you are in Wanaka which was one of our favorite places. Beautiful lake. Have fun.
