Pancakes, blowholes and surge pools.

Upon arriving in Punakaiki, we hoofed it up the highway to see the most visited natural attraction on the west coast of New Zealand: The Pancake Rocks and blowholes. It is popular for a very good reason! At this location, the layered limestone – looking very much like stacks of pancakes – has been heavily eroded into incredible landforms.

The awesome power of the Tasman Sea is on full display.

And as luck would have it, high tide occurred quite close to the setting of the sun.

  2. Yes, isn’t that a neat place, so different. We hiked down to some very nice big beaches with caves and other weird formations. Very interesting place.
