Lysefjord, New Zealand.

This famous Norwegian fjord seems to have been recreated on the southwest coast of the south island of New Zealand, only they call it “Milford Sound”. It is actually a fjord (or “fiord” as they spell it here), but have never bothered to correct the error. It was in fact formed by glaciers cutting a deep channel that was infilled by the Tasman Sea.

A visit to Milford Sound is always at or near the top of the list of things to do in New Zealand for a very good reason. It is truly magnificent.

Just waiting to go through the Homer Tunnel*. Talk about feeling small!
Some wildlife!

There were waterfalls everywhere, and this is the dry season. I cannot imagine what it looks like in the wet season!

I didn’t feel the need to take a shower.

On the way back to Te Anau from Milford Sound, we stopped at a nature walk down to Gunn Lake. You would think we had done enough of these…

Nope.

* The Homer tunnel is quite the feat of engineering! Check it out 👇

  1. Lovely pictures and videos. It definitely reminds me of the Norwegian Fjords. It’s to bad we didn’t have time to see Queenstown and the Milford Sound.
    The beard looks good Dave

    1. Ugh. I don’t know why the notifications are so flighty. Others seem to be having problems too!

  3. Beautiful pictures and videos. Unfortunately we never made it into the Fjord country or Milford Sound area, we ran out of time. This is the scenic area most often compared to Norway and the real Lysefjord is truly a spectacular sight. But they don’t have the pulpit rock, a flat plateau over the fjord where you can sit and dangle your feet over the edge and it is almost 2000 feet straight down to the water. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. Google Pulpit rock and you’ll see.
You are looking great Dave, living up to your honorary norwegian name: Leif Magnus.

    1. I’ve seen photos of pulpit rock. No way could I go near the edge with my vertigo! I cannot believe Linda sat on the edge and dangled her feet over! 😱😱

I am looking more like Leif Magnus Bjornsen! Except that I hate the cold. Lol.

      1. I plan to go back up to the pulpit rock when we go to Norway this summer, it must be more than 30 years since I was there. But I do not plan to sit and dangle my feet off the edge 😞. We will not need to take a ferry anymore to get there, they have just opened the longest under-ocean tunnel in the world, 24 km, so I want to drive through it for the first time.

      2. Stay away from that edge. It also seems to me that that crack is getting a bit wider…🤔

A 24 km tunnel?? I cannot imagine the engineering involved!! Just to manage the car exhaust. Oh well, Norway has to find a way to spend those billions in the trust fund! 💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰
