A museum of “Miles outside of the box” thinkers.

While the Steampunk Headquarters in Oamaru was utterly bizarre, the MONA museum in Hobart is, in our opinion, a deliberate pushing of the boundary of what can legitimately be called “art”. It is a full on assault on that boundary. We laughed as much as we screwed up our faces. Occasionally we were astonished at the utter brilliance.

Not sure we can describe it properly. Check this out if you want details:

The ferry over was wonderful if one paid a little extra for the “posh pit”

To start with, the museum is built down, not up. That is, the three floors are excavated from solid rock.

It started off impressively:

These are drops of water. How cool is this?

Then, well…

There was an exhibition by an artist named TomΓ‘s Saraceno. This man has a serious obsession with the atmosphere and things that can float in it, and spider webs and what they can teach us about life and the universe.

πŸ‘‡
This was seriously cool. Turn up the volume.

But my favourite was this one by Gregory Barsamian. Anyone who cannot turn off their mind – especially at night – can relate!

Looks kinda strange until one looks into the little portals…

David at night… sometimes.

But, there is no question that the following display was the most disturbing. Serious warning: do not go further if you have a weak stomach!!

The defecation machine. Warning: don’t zoom in…

We needed raspberry martinis and Tasmanian salmon to fully recover…

  1. Wow, what great things you guys are seeing on your trip to New Zealand and now Australia. I’m glad it goes well – thanks for keeping us informed and entertained. It’s -16ΒΊC today in Calgary, with 20 cm of snow in the driveway, so any news from the outside world is welcomed.

      1. Yeah, I don’t know what to make of that museum??? weird!
Just an update from here: We got some beautiful, long overdue, white fluffy snow here in Calgary. First real snowfall since November so it’s about time. I don’t necessarily fancy the minus 30 temperature, but there are great ski tracks in Glenmore Park that are waiting for me (as soon as I can get all the shoveling done around here). We drove through the mountains from Radium yesterday and it was winter wonderland!

Not so much for those of us that adore palm trees! 🌴😍

I hope you get out to ski.

Certainly some very interstellar displays and I am not sure what genre of art they would fall into lol
