Adelaide is a fascinating place, with an outstanding mix of heritage buildings, impressive modern architecture, statues, green areas, rivers and beaches. The entire CBD is surrounded by a continuous stream of parks, making it look like a donut on a map or viewed from above.
An interesting layout! Love it.The great donut, viewed from the top of Mount Lofty.Adelaide was established in the beachside area of Glenelg (Holdfast Bay). It’s kinda fancy now. $$$$It was too windy and cool to test the Ferriss wheel.A statue marking the founding of Adelaide.March 6-8, 2023.
The first thing we did, as always, was to walk. See where we end up.
Stop #1 was the Town Hall. Gorgeous building!!
That front balcony is HUGE. More on that in a bit.The traditional marble staircase waiting for a Disney Princess…πΈDid you know Adelaide is named after a German girl? They arrived here waaaay back…The Queen. The balcony. Best shot I could get from a window. See πA rather famous meet & greet occurred here.Main Hall. Now THAT is an organ!Caught a concert pianist practicing! π
Then it was time to wander a little more. The CBD is full of interesting stuff!
The stunning St. Francis Xavier’s Cathedral.A gorgeous statue along the side of the cathedral.Loved this statue!π Quite an impressive lady. One of the many memorials to the fallen. A very common sight in both NZ and Australia. Even in the small towns.Gorgeous Heritage building. The Mortlock wing of the South Australian State library. Named one of the most beautiful in the world.Inside the library. Was looking around for Harry Potter. The South Australian parliament.Impressive front entrance.A few random statues.
Then we hit the Botanical Garden (of course) and some green space (the Karrawirri Parri).
Stunning conservatory! What a lovely path!Bats! πBats do fly during the day.The river area is total zen quality. It is begging for a blanket and a book.
And of course we hooked up with our new, totally adorable friend Gill. We met her and her bestie Deb in Omapere, on the North Island of New Zealand (see our Dec 20th post on “Tides…”). They were the ladies that convinced us to go to Tazzie.
She is a tiny bundle of energy, and we spent lots of time with her. What a fabulous guide she was!
Not sure who is taller. π€£Hello from Jolly’s Boathouse!Gettin’ Goofy!
Occasionally one runs across something that makes us laugh, because it SOOO applies to someone we know.
Not surprised you fell for the legant Dame Roma…
Looks like a fascinating city. My brother speaks warmly of it and Adelaide has been a family New Year destination for him a few times.
It was lovely, only slightly tainted by the lousy weather we had. Looks like a fabulous place to live. Though so far, Brisbane and Napier lead in that category! π
You are too kind, it was so much fun getting to know you both and showing you a part of my world! Sad that the weather was so unseasonably awful while you were here and equally sad that Deb was unable to join us on our adventures. Enjoy the rest of your time in OZ and hope to catch up next time in your part of the world! Safe travels back to Canada. π€π¨π¦πΊβοΈππ¨π¦β€οΈ
